Peace activists protest on Hiroshima anniversary

August 8, 1983

Prime Minister Yasuhiro Nakasone told 10,000 people Saturday that Japan must take the lead on urging nuclear-arms reduction. He spoke at a memorial service on the 38th anniversary of the world's first atomic bomb attack at Hiroshima. But a group of young Japanese and foreign peace activists protested his support of US nuclear policy.

Across the United States and Europe, opponents of nuclear arms mounted vigils outside military bases and fasted on the Hiroshima anniversary.
