AT&T agrees to drop use of the name 'Bell'

August 5, 1983

American Telephone & Telegraph Company reluctantly agreed to give up the use of the ''Bell'' name, thus clearing the way for the dismantling of the Bell System on Jan. 1. AT&T also agreed Wednesday to other court-ordered changes in its plan to divest itself of its local phone companies, clearing the last major legal hurdle for the scheduled breakup.
