Nicaragua says US frigate invaded its waters

August 1, 1983

Nicaragua charged that a US-guided missile frigate invaded its territorial waters several times. The government communique said the intrusion of the frigate Clifton Sprague was the first provocation by the US flotilla of warships dispatched for military maneuvers.

Nicaraguan officials said earlier that a Soviet freighter that arrived in the Nicaraguan port of Corinto Saturday was bringing spare parts for agricultural machinery and not military supplies as charged by President Reagan.

Meanwhile, US envoy Richard Stone was expected in El Salvador for ''urgent'' meetings with top officials before traveling to Nicaragua today to hold talks with officials of the Sandinista government.
