10% increase in college costs predicted

August 1, 1983

The cost of a year at college will be up an average 10 percent this fall, more than twice last year's 3.9 percent inflation rate, the College Board said. The rise marks the second year in a row college bills ran past inflation. The most expensive school will be Massachusetts Institute of Technology, with a bill of more than $15,000. The College Board reported that some $16.2 billion will be available for aid to needy students, about the same as last year.
