Chad forces retake strategic northern town

August 1, 1983

The government forces of Chad's President Hissein Habre have routed Libyan-backed rebels from the key northern town of Faya-Largeau, the Chadian military command announced. The forces of former President Goukhouni Woddei had seized the town June 24.

After the capture, pro-government militants took to the streets to demand that the United States, France, and other friendly nations send in combat aircraft in response to alleged Libyan air strikes of Faya-Largeau.
