US aid for drought relief in Ethiopia is expanded

The US Agency for International Development pledged an additional $700,000 for drought-stricken Ethiopia. AID was responding to pressure from volunteer agencies that had criticized AID for not responding earlier to urgent appeals for assistance for Ethiopia.
Most of the money will go toward transporting food and medical supplies to some 41/2 million people threatened by severe food shortages and famine. AID also announced it would request an additional $3 million for fiscal year 1984 to augment a feeding program in Ethiopia.
