Chrysler profits prompt wages talks with union

July 26, 1983

The United Automobile Workers opened wage talks with Chrysler in the US and Canada to demand a share of Chrysler's record second-quarter profits. Chrysler workers in both countries had made concessions to help the company avoid bankruptcy. They make $2 an hour less than their counterparts at General Motors and Ford. The union is seeking a wage increase of at least $1 an hour immediately, with the rest of the difference to be made up by the end of the new wage agreement in January. It set a Wednesday deadline for completion of the talks.
