Vatican confirms hot line for kidnapper contact

July 19, 1983

The Vatican confirmed it had installed a hot line to talk with the presumed kidnappers of Emanuela Orlandi, the daughter of a Vatican messenger who was reported missing last month. The kidnappers had requested the direct telephone line.

In other developments, the recording of a voice of a girl apparently being subjected to ill treatment was confirmed by a family member to be that of Emanuela, the Italian news agency ANSA said. Another voice on the tape called for the release of Turkish gunman Mehmet Ali Agca, who is in jail for shooting the Pope in 1981.
