Chad unmoved by OAU call for peace settlement

July 18, 1983

A call by the Organization of African Unity for peace talks to end fighting in Chad has failed to persuade the Chadian government to enter negotiations with rebels led by Goukhouni Woddei.

But Information Minister Soumalia Mahamat said the Chad government would not agree to a cease-fire or to talks to end the fighting until Libya ended its involvement. To prove its point, the government Sunday presented in public a Libyan prisoner who said he was one of 1,500 Libyan regulars fighting alongside Woddei's rebels.
