House panel says it may subpoena Reagan papers

July 13, 1983

The head of the House subcommittee looking into the 1980 presidential campaign says if trustees of the Reagan papers do not provide access to them, he may subpoena the documents.

Presidential spokesman Larry Speakes said, however, that Rep. Donald Albosta (D) of Michigan will have to try to work out an agreement on his own with the Justice Department, which was granted the right to inspect original documents in the Reagan files of the Hoover Institution at Stanford University.
