Premier of Nepal resigns after no-confidence vote

July 12, 1983

Nepalese Prime Minister Surya Bahadur Thapa resigned after being heavily defeated in a no-confidence vote in the country's National Assembly. The confidence motion came after a spate of government ministers resigned. The motion accused Mr. Thapa of corruption, failure to protect Nepal's partyless political system, mismanagement of a food shortage, and general mishandling of the economy.
