Chad troops retake 2 towns from rebels

July 12, 1983

Government troops recaptured two small northeastern towns from Libyan-backed rebel forces, authoritative sources said. They said Oum Chalouba and Kalait, north of the strategic eastern town of Abeche, were back under government control. Fierce fighting continued in Abeche, they said.

Meanwhile, the Chadian government renewed its appeal for French military support.
