Shultz winds up Mideast talks

The United States is determined to continue efforts to implement the Israeli-Lebanese agreement on the withdrawal of all foreign forces from Lebanon. But Secretary of State George Shultz, speaking to reporters on the last leg of his swing through the Mideast, again conceded that his talks in Saudi Arabia, Syria, Lebanon, Israel, Jordan, and Egypt did not result in any progress toward putting the US-sponsored accord into effect. Mr. Shultz pledged, however, that the US ''will continue with patience and perseverance,'' reports Monitor contributor James Dorsey.

Mr. Shultz's brief stopover in Cairo on his way back to Washington is believed to have been a courtesy call to brief Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak on his talks with Middle East leaders. Mr. Mubarak is said to have expressed concern over Israel's plans to pull back its troops in Lebanon to a line in the south of the country.

Egyptian officials said they share Lebanese concern that a partial Israeli withdrawal may lead to the division of Lebanon into a Syrian and an Israeli sphere of influence and to a rekindling of sectarian fighting in Lebanon.
