Aid workers held in Sudan face new ransom deadline

July 7, 1983

Guerrillas threatening to kill five Western aid workers in southern Sudan extended by one day their execution deadline, diplomats and relief agency officials said.

Despite the extension until 1:00 a.m. Eastern daylight time today (July 6), there was no indication the agencies involved would meet the demands of clothes, cash, and drugs, diplomats said. The hostages, including two Americans, fell into guerrilla hands nearly two weeks ago and are presumed to be alive.
