US envoy off to explore accord for El Salvador

July 7, 1983

Richard Stone, special envoy to Central America, leaves today (July 7) on a 10-day trip to explore the possibilities of a peaceful settlement in El Salvador.

The State Department said Mr. Stone will stop first in San Salvador and then visit other countries in the region. Administration officials have said he will try to talk directly with leftist guerrillas in El Salvador, who have sought a meeting with US representatives.
