Shultz in Syria for key talks

July 6, 1983

Secretary of State George Shultz arrived in Syria for crucial talks with President Hafez Assad. Earlier, he assured Lebanese President Amin Gemayel that the United States is committed to help secure withdrawal of all foreign forces from Lebanon.

Mr. Shultz went to Damascus to try to persuade the Syrians to withdraw their forces from Lebanon - an effort already dismissed by the Syrians as an ''impossible mission.'' Shultz said he did not have a ''basket of things to offer'' the Syrians. But he said Mr. Assad and Foreign Minister Abdel Halim Khaddam could bring up any issue, including the issue of the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights.
