'We want out!' say Staten Islanders

July 5, 1983

Staten Island is tired of being just another New York City borough - and its residents are shouting ''secede!'' In a poll conducted by the Staten Island Advance, 96 percent of the residents of the island borough voted to secede from New York City on clip-out coupons provided by the newspaper.

The movement was sparked by a recent court ruling that ordered representation on the New York City Board of Estimate based on population. The island's representation would be cut.
