4 arrested in Chicago on bomb-plan charges

July 1, 1983

Four alleged members of the Puerto Rican FALN underground group were arrested in Chicago Wednesday and charged with plotting to bomb military installations in the city over the Fourth of July weekend, the FBI said.

US Attorney Dan K. Webb said authorities have evidence the four had conspired to bomb a northwest Chicago Marines training center and to free jailed FALN members from Illinois prisons. FALN seeks independence for Puerto Rico and has claimed responsibility for more than 100 bombings and attempted bombings in Chicago and New York since 1974.
