FBI joins widening probe of briefing-papers incident

July 1, 1983

The FBI has been called in to investigate how President Reagan's 1980 campaign acquired Jimmy Carter's debate briefing papers. FBI spokesman Roger Young said the FBI entered the case late Wednesday at the request of the Justice Department, which had been asked by Mr. Reagan to investigate the debate controversy for evidence of illegality.

On Wednesday, Michigan Democrat Don Albosta's House panel examining the matter said he is prepared to call top administration officials as witnesses, if necessary.
