Israeli hospitals open as doctors win gains

June 28, 1983

Israeli hospitals reopened after doctors won concessions from the government in a contract dispute and ended a two-week hunger strike that had virtually paralyzed medical services.

The doctors ended their fast after the government met their wage demands and agreed to submit to arbitration on other outstanding issues. The government agreed to raise the salary for junior doctors from $350 a month to the national average of $650.
