Bush defends policy on Central America

June 28, 1983

Vice-President George Bush defended Washington's role in Central America, saying its policy was to encourage fledgling democracies to behave more democratically.

The US involvement in El Salvador and neighboring countries was a key issue during Mr. Bush's meeting with Prime Minister Olof Palme at the start of his five-nation tour of Nordic countries. Several hundred demonstrators gathered in a central square in the capital to protest against the Bush visit and US policies in Latin America. Police said there were no incidents.
