A debt of recognition is paid in Boston

It was in 1867 that the Union Army's first black unit was formed in Massachusetts. The 54th Volunteer Infantry Regiment was led by Col. Robert Gould Shaw, and its service was later to be memorialized on the Boston Common. But the names of the men who served were never included. At the spot where Booker T. Washington, the famed black educator and author, addressed the original dedication audience 86 years ago, the names have now been added.
