Ghanaian council survives apparent coup attempt

Accra radio said Ghana's government forces retook the radio station and regained control after an apparent coup attempt Sunday. The radio earlier broadcast an announcement saying ''revolutionary fighters'' had disbanded the ruling Provisional National Defense Council. The broadcast had called for the arrest of 10 military officers, including the Army's commander. The radio said the first announcement was made by ''the operational commander,'' named as Carlos Halidu Gyiwah.

The alleged coup attempt was directed at the government of Flt. Lt. Jerry Rawlings, who himself seized power in a 1979 coup.
