N.Y.C. to get $108 million from US for mass transit

June 15, 1983

Transportation Secretary Elizabeth Dole announced a federal grant of $108.2 million to New York City for rehabilitation of its mass transit system. Mrs. Dole said the grant underlined the Reagan administration's commitment to capital improvement for public transportation. But she also stressed the government's desire to decrease operating subsidies for such operations.

Her remarks followed Monday's ruling by a federal court judge in Connecticut that that state's ban on tandem trucks violated the constitutional powers of Congress to regulate interstate commerce.
