NATO Officials say USSR is resisting arms accord

June 10, 1983

NATO officials accused the Soviet Union of resisting an equitable accord on medium-range missiles in Europe and of refusing to negotiate seriously. A consulting group of high-ranking alliance arms control officials, meeting during a conference here, approved a statement sharply criticizing Moscow and reaffirming the West's plan to begin deploying medium-range missiles in Europe at the end of the year.

The foreign ministers are expected to adopt a statement at the end of their talks today (June 10) pledging to deploy the missiles unless arms talks produce an agreement.
