Poland's Jaruzelski likley to face party criticism

May 31, 1983

Polish leader Gen. Wojciech Jaruzelski is expected to face some strong criticism of Communist Party policies during a long-delayed plenary session of its Central Committee today (May 31), Western diplomats said.

The meeting follows Soviet press attacks on the more liberal wing of the party, which the diplomats interpreted as a warning to Jaruzelski to act against those who oppose more orthodox Communist control.

The diplomats said the session is not likley to result in a major shakeup, as had earlier been expected, but there still could be some changes.
