3 W. Germans missing in Nicaragua border incident

May 27, 1983

Three West Germans disappeared after antigovernment guerrillas attacked their boat on the San Juan River between Nicaragua and Costa Rica, Nicaragua said. In Frankfurt, West Germany, the medical aid group Medico International said the Germans, journalists Valentin Schwab and Marianne Siess and medical aid worker Walter Schutz, were searching the river for a ferryboat donated to the Nicaraguans by the city of Bremen, Germany. Earlier, rebel leaders said some 5, 000 Nicaraguan troops had launched an offensive in Nueva Segovia Province to try to oust rebel forces from entrenched positions.
