Illinois court won't hear Chicago council dispute

May 20, 1983

The Illinois Supreme Court refused to hear an appeal to settle the power struggle between CHicago Mayor Harold Washington and rebel aldermen. Attorneys for both the mayor and dissident aldermen leader Edward Vrdolyak made a direct appeal to the high court to settle a standoff over who is legally entitled to head the Chicago council's committees. But the justices sent the matter to an appellate court instead.
