Labour Party opens fire to unseat Mrs. Thatcher

May 17, 1983

Britain's opposition Labour Party launched its election campaign with a stinging attack on Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. Opposition leader Michael Foot, who needs the biggest political landslide since 1945 to oust Mrs. Thatcher in the June 9 election, used his strongest card - the nation's 13.3 percent unemployment rate. He said the prime minister had done more to hurt Britain's economy than Hitler's bombers.

Madison Avenue's flashy imagemaking techniques are making inroads in British politics, showing voters a confident Mrs. Thatcher and a usually disheveled Mr. Foot in a new suit with a fresh haircut.
