Thatcher, on election trail, cancels Reagan meeting

May 12, 1983

Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher has canceled a meeting with President Reagan this month, scheduled right before the economic summit meeting in Williamsburg, Va.

In a statement, she said Britain's June 9 general elections would prevent her from making the trip and hinted she might not attend the summit itself. The same day, Mrs. Thatcher was given a commanding 15 percent lead in public opinion polls and said the outcome of the June elections would be crucial to the Geneva arms talks. She supports deployment of US nuclear missiles in Europe. The opposition Labour Party does not.
