Salvadorean rebels strike rail link to eastern region

May 4, 1983

Leftist rebels blew up the only rail line linking San Salvador to eastern El Salvador, officials said. A railway spokesman said the guerrillas blew up track outside the city of San Vicente, stopping train services to the economically vital eastern area of the country. The attack followed the destruction of six road bridges in eastern El Salvador during the past few days. The rebels also charged that Honduran troops crossed the border last week before their forces pushed them back. Meanwhile, the Army claimed its forces overran nine rebel camps in a counterinsurgency sweep 20 miles north of San Salvador.
