National panel proposes sweeping school reforms

A bipartisan panel proposed a sweeping crash program for the nation's schools that includes a longer school year, better-paid teachers, and more homework. The National Commission on Excellence in Education said US schools are in dire need of reform. It also recommended a crackdown on disruptive students;stiffer college-admission standards; and more required high school math, science, and English courses.
