Walesa backs calls for May Day rallies

April 21, 1983

In another affront to the government, Solidarity leader Lech Walesa backed underground calls for unofficial May Day rallies. In his first news conference at his home, he said workers should be allowed to celebrate the holiday as they wish. Mr. Walesa also proposed a dialogue between the government and him, but added that if this failed he would adopt different, undisclosed tactics. Authorities, meanwhile, warned that police would firmly oppose Solidarity-backed protests on May Day.
