Four suspects held in Beirut bombing

April 21, 1983

A Lebanese official said four suspects were arrested in the US Embassy bombing this week. Foreign Minister Elie Salam said the suspects were in custody, but refused to give their nationalities or say when they were arrested. He said there was no reason to link the bombing to negotiations with Israel on foreign troop withdrawals from Lebanon. But he did accuse Israel of exploiting the incident to keep its troops in Lebanon. News of the arrests came amid reports that Syrian-trained commandos were responsible for Monday's bombing.

In Washington, the Senate Foreign Relations Committee voted to require congressional approval for any significant increase in US troops for the peacekeeping force in Lebanon.
