Hostages are released at Pennsylvania prison

April 20, 1983

Two inmates armed with smuggled pistols ended a more than five-day siege at a maximum-security state prison here. The inmates at Western Penitentiary freed their two hostages - data supervisor Kostas Mastros and guard Daniel Kohut. The two were seized by the inmates last Thursday during a botched escape attempt. Authorities had been negotiating with the inmates over a long list of conditions the pair had submitted earlier.
