Britain returned tit for tat with the Soviet Union, expelling Soviet diplomat Anatoli Chernaev. The move appeared to be retaliation for the Soviet Union's expulsion last week of two Britons - itself a retaliation for Britain's decision to order out two Soviet diplomats and a journalist suspected of spying.
