Prime Minister Indira Gandhi said she was delighted with the success of the film ''Gandhi,'' at the Academy Awards. It won eight Oscars, including best picture. ''May the spirit of Mahatma Gandhi, which the film evokes, guide the world away from violence and towards peace and goodwill,'' said Mrs. Gandhi, who is not related to Mohandas K. Gandhi.

At the awards ceremony, the film also won best director (Richard Attenborough) and best actor (Ben Kingsley). Best actress went to Meryl Streep in ''Sophie's Choice.'' Jessica Lange won best supporting actress for ''Tootsie.'' Best supporting actor went to Lou Gossett Jr., who became the first black actor in 20 years to win an Oscar, for his role in ''An Officer and a Gentleman.''
