Eastern Airlines laid off 1,600 workers, including 1,200 union workers, just hours after the carrier's largest union approved a contract guaranteeing a 32.3 percent wage hike by Jan. 1. The International Association of Machinists said the layoffs, which represent 4 percent of the company's work force and take effect May 1, were an act of bad faith.
