Vacant house

April 5, 1983

Did a family live here and move away? Windows are boarding the memories in. Someone made garden one high spring day (or many days). Now weeds begin pushing for space, though geraniums and a sunflower guard the place and wait. Nobody leaves, and nobody comes. A spider has woven a lock on the gate. The people to whom this house was home - are they traveling? Will they be back? Do they sail the Pacific? See fountains of Rome? No smoke talks from the chimney stack, but there's no FOR SALE sign on the lawn, and an open future to think upon.
