General Motors faces a possible recall of between 2.7 and 5.3 million cars. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration made an initial finding of defect on GM rear axles and scheduled another hearing. Involved are 1978, 1979, and 1980 models of Chevrolet's Malibu, Monte Carlo, and El Camino; Pontiac's Le Mans and Grand Prix; Oldsmobile's Cutlass and Cutlass Supreme; Buick's Century and Regal; and the GMC Caballero.
