Glemp avoids criticizing Polish government

Poland's primate, Jozef Cardinal Glemp, appears to be avoiding church-state controversies in anticipation of Pope John Paul's visit in June. In his brief and cautious Easter address, the cardinal refrained from direct criticism of the Communist authorities and made no reference to earlier church calls for an amnesty for those convicted under martial law. But other priests took a tougher line in their sermons.
