Salvadorean rebels claim crack Army unit overcome

April 1, 1983

A US-trained Salvadorean Army company was virtually wiped out in a 12-hour battle near the border with Honduras, leftist guerrillas claimed. The rebel Radio Venceremos said the fighting began after rebel forces overran San Isidro, in the upper reaches of eastern Morazan Province. Shortly after they seized the hamlet, a US-trained company of government troops was dispatched and pinned down by heavy fire. If the rebels' report is confirmed, this could be one of their biggest victories this year.
