It seems to take only one trip to the Great Wall of China to make American politicians appreciate Peking's concerns about US policy. Now that House Speaker Tip O'Neill has made the jaunt, he also is stressing the need to improve US-Chinese ties and promising to try to sway Washington away from too close a tie with Taiwan.

The Chinese leadership knows how to lay it on. It's hard to beat the Great Wall. Not to mention Peking duck.
