Angolan guerrillas claim to cut Huambo rail link

Angola's main rebel group said it attacked four towns along the British-owned Benguela railroad earlier this month. It was part of an offensive by the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA) against economic and military targets. A communique released here gave details of the attacks, which, if confirmed, would mean the rebelshad cut the main supply route to Huambo, Angola's second-largest city. Until the Angolan civil war broke out in 1975, the Benguela railroad was the main outlet for exports of copper, cobalt, and manganese from Zaire and Zambia.
