Pope's trip to Poland will not include Gdansk

Pope John Paul II will visit former Solidarity trade union strongholds in industrial regions of south and west Poland June 16 to 22. The Pontiff's itinerary was published jointly by Polish government and church officials. Not surprisingly, the port of Gdansk, birthplace of the Soviet bloc's first independent union, was not included in plans for the Pope's second pilgrimage to his native country.

Meanwhile, the Bulgarian Embassy in Rome denied that a Bulgarian defector, reported to have said his country was behind a plot to kill the Pope in 1981, was either a diplomat or a secret agent. The New York Times, which had published the report, said there was new evidence to support claims that Bulgaria was involved in the plot.
