Adopt-a-Ship, importance of example

March 21, 1983

Under the Adopt-a-Ship plan, sponsored by the Propeller Club of the United States for more than 47 years, children correspond with the master, officers, and crew of one ship throughout the school year. They may ask about any aspect of the ship's daily routine, such as weather, cargoes, climate, geography, history, or people in foreign lands, and the ships send information back to the children.

Captains, many of whom have participated in the program for years, visit classrooms when feasible. Teachers report the program has been both popular and useful as an educational tool.
