School-segregation issue revived in Louisville, Ky.

Public schools in metropolitan Louisville are drifting back toward racial segregation despite a 1975 order by a US district court mandating desegregation, the Kentucky Commission on Human Rights charged.

The agency concluded that 25 of the 129 schools in the unified Jefferson County system violated the racial composition guidelines in the court order, reports Monitor contributor Richard Walker. Jefferson county officials had previously said they would make changes in the desegregation plan late next year , but the commission said the new drift toward segregation was significant enough that action was needed for the begining of the 1983-84 school year.
