British coal miners don't go for a strike

Britain's 200,000 coal miners apparently turned down a strike proposed by union leaders. Although final tallies weren't available, newspaper and broadcast reports said the miners decided not to strike - in effect, backing away from a confrontation with the government over the threatened closure of unprofitable coal pits. The result was seen as a major victory for Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher.
