Salvadorean official sees amnesty to ease elections

El Salvador's deputy foreign minister said his government would declare a general amnesty in August to smooth the way for elections. Alejandro Gomez Vides also told Reuters a commission would be set up to devise ways for guerrilla participation in the vote. Mr. Gomez Vides leads the country's observer delegation to the nonaligned summit here.

The fighting continued in El Salvador, however. The Army claimed it repelled three separate guerrilla attacks launched after Pope John Paul's departure Sunday. It also denied rebel charges that US-trained troops massacred 124 peasants last month.
