Poland arrests prominent official of banned union

March 7, 1983

Police arrested journalist Alexander Malachowski, a prominent official of the banned Solidarity union in Warsaw. Malachowski's wife did not know what charges he faced.

The move came as reports reached Warsaw of action against other union figures in different parts of the country. Last week, a Katowice court sentenced a former union activist to three years in prison and five Solidarity officials went on trial in Elblag, sources said.
